The Margin Is the Story We Keep Not Telling

We got through it. The grid held, the corridors absorbed the season's arrivals, the reservoirs stopped falling. Every desk in this paper filed some version of that sentence this week, and every version was true. But there is a word running quietly under all of them — margin — and it deserves the front of the sentence. Fusion carried the worst afternoons past thirty-one percent of the grid, yes, and one province still browned out and one substation still aged out under load. The migrant count climbed again and the queue, mostly, moved. Each of these is a win measured against a decade ago and a loss measured against the buffer we would want. The temptation of a summer survived is to bank the relief and forget the thinness. The discipline this century demands is the opposite: to read every held system as a specification for the one we have not yet built. We did not lose the grid. We should not mistake that for having enough.
