The Review Nobody Will Close Enters Its Second Year of Doubt

A safety inquiry into neural interfaces stays open and contested, and the augmented live inside the uncertainty.

The safety review of the newest generation of neural interfaces remains open and unresolved this month, neither clearing the devices nor pulling them, and for the roughly five percent of humanity now augmented, the limbo has become the condition itself. Regulators reiterated this week that the inquiry continues; Somaform Augmetics, whose implants sit at its center, said it is cooperating and that its lines remain in use. Between those two careful sentences lives someone like Kwabena Mensah, a Lagos logistics coordinator with a two-year-old cognitive implant who keeps a paper backup of everything "in case the answer someday is no." Advocates say the open review is responsible governance; critics say indefinite doubt is its own harm. Dr. Naomi Eze notes the augmented population keeps growing regardless, each new user adopting a technology whose verdict is still, deliberately, pending. Certainty, for now, is the one enhancement on offer to no one.
