A Week On, Aurora's New Reactor Steadies a Nervous Grid

The baseload unit that came online the previous Friday is already blunting the desert heat's evening peaks.

The baseload reactor Aurora Fusion Works synced a week ago Friday has completed its first full week feeding the reconnected grid, and operators say its steadiest gift is a boring one: fewer evening brownouts. Fusion now supplies just past 31 percent of the grid, and the new unit's flat, weather-proof output is covering the 8 p.m. air-conditioning surge that rolling heat has driven all summer. "A fusion megawatt does not care that it is August," said Emeka Okonkwo, the company's chief executive, at a briefing where he pointedly declined to name Kronos, Aurora's larger rival. For a grid technician like Dae-jung Park, who rides the load desk overnight in a Nevada control room, the difference is measured in calls that no longer come. Analysts caution one reactor does not remake a continental grid, and the summer's demand records still stand. But for one week of nights, the lights held.
