After Brazil's Vote, a Country Wakes Up Still Sharing a Kitchen

BRASÍLIA — By the numbers, the result was clear enough: the incumbent coalition held, the resurgent Naturalist bloc took roughly a quarter of the seats it had chased, and the enhancement-cap platform that dominated the campaign will not become law this term. By the measure that actually governs a household, nothing was settled at all. Across the country on Friday morning, families that had argued the augmentation question for a month sat down to the same breakfast tables, on the same terms, with the same unhealed lines running through them. In a Brasília apartment the Tavares family made coffee in a kitchen where a daughter with the faint temple-scars of a neural implant and a brother who has none passed the same sugar without a word about it. "The election is over. The kitchen is not," said Inês Tavares, who had told this paper in July that the parties wanted her to choose between her children and she would not. She did not. Some four percent of Brazilians are now augmented, a share climbing every year, and the vote proved mainly that a country can render a verdict at the ballot box and remain, at the table, exactly as divided as before. The politicians called it a mandate. The families called it Tuesday.
