The Vote Is Not the Verdict, and We Should Say So Plainly

A nation of hundreds of millions has settled, by ballot, the terms under which augmentation may spread through its clinics and workplaces. That is democracy doing its ordinary, difficult work, and it deserves respect. It does not deserve to be mistaken for something larger than it is. A regulation tells us what a society will permit; it does not tell us what is safe, or wise, or kind. Those questions live in longer time than a campaign — in the open, contested safety reviews still underway, in the roughly 5 percent of humans already living with implants whose experience no vote consulted. The temptation this weekend will be to read Saturday's result as a judgment on the technology itself, and Monday's markets will encourage the error by moving loudly. Resist it. The most useful sentence a paper can print now is the least dramatic one: a vote decides a rule, and the harder truths keep their own slower calendar. We are not owed a verdict this fast.
