In Lagos, the Tide and the Corridor Meet at the Same Doorstep

LAGOS — On Victoria Island the new Tethys Hydrous Group pumping station runs day and night, pushing desalinated water inland to districts that spent last summer on rationed hours. It is a genuine relief, and residents say so. It is also, they note without much drama, delivered to streets where the lagoon now stands a hand's width from the doorsteps at every high tide, held back by seawalls the state raises a little each year. The two facts sit side by side in the same neighborhood: fresh water arriving through a pipe, salt water arriving through the ground. "We drink the one and we sweep out the other," said market trader Folasade Bello, propping her stall on cinder blocks as she has all season. Municipal engineers frame it as ordinary coastal management for a warming century — the sea a fraction higher each year, the walls a fraction taller, the pumps a fraction stronger. Nobody in Lagos treats this as a crisis. It is simply the arithmetic of living where the land and the water have agreed to keep negotiating.
