In a Mixed Household, the Vote Is Just the Dinner Table

Away from the rallies, ordinary families live the augmentation question one meal at a time.

In a Mixed Household, the Vote Is Just the Dinner Table — The Lost Archive, 2124

SÃO PAULO — While the country argued about the enhanced and the natural-born as if they lived in separate nations, Mateo Solis spent election eve in a kitchen where they share a table and the salt. The Ferreira household — an augmented father whose cognitive implants let him hold two jobs, a natural-born mother who declined the same procedure, a teenage son still deciding — is the family the campaign's abstractions never fit. "The politicians drew a line down the middle of my house," the mother said, ladling stew for four, "and none of us know which side the boy is on, including the boy." Across roughly five percent of humanity now augmented, most live not in enclaves but in exactly such mixed homes, where the question is not policy but who clears the plates. The son, sixteen, said the choice frightens him less than being sorted by it. "I want to decide because it is mine," he said. "Not because a vote decided which room I sit in." The stew, his mother noted, tastes the same to everyone.
