The Unbreakable Channel Still Cannot Carry a Single Word

A record week for quantum-secured traffic renews an old public confusion the physicists keep patiently correcting.

SINGAPORE — A surge in Q-Net traffic this summer has revived a persistent misunderstanding, and the researchers who built the network spent the week gently dismantling it again. As quantum-key-distribution links carried record encrypted volume across finance and relief logistics, commentators once more described the backbone as sending messages instantly across the planet. It does no such thing. "Entanglement secures the channel; it does not speak through it," said Dr. Wei-Lin Tan of the Singapore Institute, who fields the confusion in nearly every public talk she gives. The quantum layer distributes an unbreakable key; the actual words still travel the ordinary classical network, no faster than light has ever allowed. What changed this summer is trust: corridors moving migrant identity records and reservoir-allocation orders now lean on Q-Net precisely because the key cannot be copied. "People want it to be magic," Tan said. "It is better than magic. It is honest arithmetic that no one can forge." The distinction, she added, is not pedantry — it is the whole guarantee.
