After Singapore's Upgrade, a Lagos Clinic Locks Its Records for Good
The Q-Net expansion reopens an old argument about who the unbreakable channel actually protects.

LAGOS — When the Singapore Institute widened the Q-Net backbone this month, the physicist Dr. Wei-Lin Tan framed it as plumbing, not magic: quantum-key distribution secures a channel, it does not send a message faster or read a mind. At a maternity clinic in Yaba, records officer Ifeoma Balogun cares about one consequence of that plumbing — her patients' files now travel the classical network under an unbreakable key. "For years a leaked record could cost a woman her insurance or her marriage," Balogun said. "Now the wire cannot be tapped." Privacy advocates counter that an unbreakable channel protects the powerful as readily as the vulnerable, and Tan concedes the tool is neutral. The Institute has said only that a larger processor demonstration may follow later in the year; nothing of the sort has run yet. For Balogun, the argument is abstract and the relief is not. "My worry was never the physics," she said. "It was the leak. This closes the leak."
