We Mistake the Milestone for the Emergency
The round numbers we mark are late; the emergency is always the ordinary week.

We are a species that waits for the round number. We marked twelve billion, we mark +2.8°C, we will mark the migrant count when it reaches some clean total worth a headline — and every one of those marks arrives after the fact it announces. The milestone is a receipt, not a warning. This week the grid held a summer afternoon at a four percent margin, held by hand, and no round number attended it. A family in Jakarta weighed a paid house against a rising canal, and no ceremony marked the day they decided. This is the shape of the century: the emergency is not the milestone but the ordinary week that precedes it, uncounted. Fusion carries a third of the grid, and that third is why a hard week was merely hard. We should learn to honor the four percent — the margin held quietly, the doorstep not yet abandoned — because that is where the work is, and the milestone is only its late and tidy echo.
