SEATTLE — There is a room, in every regional grid on a warming Earth, where the whole summer comes down to a single moving number, and this week I stood in one and watched it. The number is the margin — how many megawatts the grid can still summon above what the heat is already demanding — and on a +2.8°C afternoon with twelve billion people running their cooling at once, the margin is thin enough to read like a pulse. At 3 p.m. it dipped under four percent. The dispatchers do not panic at four percent; they work it. They shed a shuttered warehouse here, lean on a fusion baseload there, ask a corridor of desalination plants to idle their pumps for ninety minutes and pay them for the favor. "People think the grid is machines," said the shift lead, eyes on the margin line. "It's arithmetic. We do the arithmetic faster than the heat does." Fusion carries a third of it now, and that third is the reason the number never quite hit zero. But the margin is where the century actually lives — not in the milestone, in the four percent, held by hand, one hour at a time.
