Aurora's New Reactor Held Its Load Through the First Heat Peak

Five days after synchronizing, the baseload unit met a record demand curve without a stumble.

GENEVA — The reactor Aurora Fusion Works synchronized to the reconnected grid the previous Friday met its first real test this week, holding steady through a heat-driven demand peak that would once have forced rolling curtailments. Fusion now supplies a little past 31 percent of the grid, up from the roughly 30 percent it had held all year, and the new unit carried its share without tripping. "A reactor is not proven when it starts; it is proven when the afternoon gets ugly and it does not blink," said Emeka Okonkwo, the company's chief executive, at a Geneva briefing. Grid engineers at Alpine Geneva Polytechnic, who monitored the run independently, confirmed the unit tracked load cleanly across the peak. The gain is incremental — a single percentage point — but for the cooling systems of a heat-stressed continent, one point of firm baseload is measured in households that kept their air moving.
