The Milestone Is Not the Map

We are a civilization that has learned to cheer for percentages. Fusion past a third of the grid; augmentation past a twentieth of humanity; a colony nearing fifty thousand on Mars. Each is real, each is hard-won, and each arrives wrapped in the quiet suggestion that the milestone and the remedy are the same thing. They are not. A third of the grid runs on fusion, and four Phoenix districts still went amber on Sunday. A hundred and twelve million people are registered as climate migrants this month, and the count is not a milestone at all — it is a wound we have agreed to measure. The danger of the round number is that it lets us feel we have arrived somewhere when we have only labeled where we stand. Progress is not a scoreboard; it is whether the poorest address gets water tonight, light tonight, a place tonight. Cheer the number if you must. Then ask it the only question that matters: for whom.
