A Jakarta Choir Rehearses for an Audience It Will Never Hear Back

JAKARTA — In a community hall above the flood line, a choir of ninety voices is rehearsing a piece written for people fourteen minutes away. The recording will travel to the Valles Marineris colony, where roughly fifty thousand residents receive Earth's culture on a lengthening delay and answer, if at all, in kind. "We are not performing to them. We are performing at a distance they can keep," said conductor Bayu Santoso, who shaped the piece around long silences the way the colony shapes its days. The exchange has become a small ritual between the worlds: Earth sends a song, Mars sends a song back a fortnight later, and neither audience ever claps. For the singers, the delay stopped feeling like a barrier and started feeling like a form. "You learn to mean something," Santoso said, "and then let it go for a quarter of an hour before it lands."
