For Augmented Miners, the Brazil Vote Is About the Body, Not the Ballot

Ahead of Saturday's referendum, the roughly five percent already modified describe a debate held over their heads.

CARAJÁS, BRAZIL — The five percent of humanity that is already augmented rarely gets asked what the augmentation debate feels like from inside a modified body. This week, in the iron ranges where neural-linked exosuits are routine, some of them answered. "They vote about us as if we are a policy," said a rig operator named Dario Mendes, whose lumbar interface lets him lift through a twelve-hour shift. "I am a man with a good back now. That is the whole of it." Dr. Naomi Eze's reporting found the workforce here less interested in Saturday's ballot than in the open, contested safety review of the neural-interface lines several of them wear — a review that regulators have neither closed nor cleared. Mendes and his crew want the review finished honestly more than they want the vote to go any particular way. "Pass the law, don't pass it," he said. "Just tell me the thing in my spine is sound." The figure that matters to him is not the five percent. It is one.
