From Valles Marineris, a Fourteen-Minute Message and a Colony Near Fifty Thousand

The delay to Mars is widening as the planets separate, and the settlers are counting themselves.

VALLES MARINERIS (via relay) — The message took a little over fourteen minutes to cross to Earth, two minutes longer each way than it did in July, and it will keep lengthening through the autumn as the two worlds draw apart. In it, the colony administration reported its population standing just under fifty thousand and climbing steadily toward that mark, a figure it expects to pass within weeks. "You learn to speak in soliloquies," said a habitat engineer named Priti Sharma, whose reply to Earth will not land until she has already gone to sleep. "There is no arguing at this distance. You say your piece and you wait." Idris Nakasone's relayed dispatch describes a settlement that has stopped feeling provisional — schools on a second shift, a third greenhouse ring under pressure — even as every conversation with home now carries the lag of a quarter-hour. The delay, the colony notes drily, is the one Martian statistic that only ever grows.
