In the Heat's Off-Hours, Cities Rebuild the Night

LAGOS — The most reliable venue in the city this August is midnight. Across the hottest megacities, a summer of record afternoons has pushed public life into the cool hours, and a whole after-dark culture has grown up to meet it: night markets, open-air cinemas, dawn football leagues that kick off at four. In Lagos, where daytime highs have shuttered outdoor work for weeks, community organizer Femi Adebayo has run a rolling program of 11 p.m. concerts in a shaded plaza. "The heat took the day from us," he said. "We took the night back." Sociologists at Pacific Rim University, tracking the shift across a dozen cities, call it a quiet adaptation with real costs — sleep disrupted, families out of sync — and real gains in a summer with few of them. With the global anomaly steady at +2.8°C and no cool season in sight for the equatorial belt, the nocturnal turn looks less like a fashion than a settlement with the climate. The music, at least, is good. It has to be; it is the only show in the cool.
