Singapore Lab Stress-Tests The Q-Net Backbone Before A Milestone Run
A physicist explains why the achievement is a channel, not a phone line.

SINGAPORE — The most common question the lab receives, its lead physicist says, is also the one she must gently refuse. Researchers at the Singapore Institute this week ran endurance trials on the Q-Net backbone, the quantum-key-distribution network that has secured the world's classical channels since 2110, ahead of a larger processor demonstration planned for next month. Public imagination keeps recasting the work as instant communication across space; it is not. "Entanglement locks the door; it does not carry the letter through it," said Dr. Wei-Lin Tan, who runs the institute's outreach program. "No information travels faster than light here. What we guarantee is that no one else can read the mail." The distinction matters commercially: banks, hospitals and the Global Concordat Council route sensitive traffic over Q-Net precisely because interception is detectable, not because it is fast. This week's trials, Tan said, were "boring on purpose" — thousands of key exchanges logged without a single silent failure. The milestone run comes later. The trust, she noted, is built now.
