In the Heat-Dome Week, Lagos Reopened Its Night Markets After Dark

LAGOS — When the heat dome made afternoons a health hazard, Lagos did what cities under pressure have always done: it moved. Through the worst week, the Yaba and Balogun districts pushed their trading and gathering into the hours after nine, when the pavement finally gave up the day's heat. "We did not decide it in a meeting," said market association organizer Ngozi Ekwueme, watching a lane that at midnight held families, food stalls and a brass band. "The body decided it. You cannot sell, cannot cook, cannot dance at three in the afternoon this August. So the city became a night city." Vendors report steadier trade in the cool hours; clinics report fewer heat cases. The adaptation is improvised and imperfect — sleep is scarce, and not every worker can shift — but it is, Ekwueme said, a refusal to simply endure. "We are not waiting for the weather to be kind," she said. "We are meeting it where it lets us." By dawn the lanes empty, the heat returns, and the city sleeps through the day it can no longer use.
