Singapore Institute Widens Its Q-Net Test Bed to Nine Cities
The quantum-secured backbone adds nodes ahead of a fall processor demonstration — encryption, not communication.

SINGAPORE — The Singapore Institute said this week that its quantum-key-distribution test bed, run over the Q-Net backbone, now spans nine metropolitan nodes after Jakarta and Lagos came online in July. The expansion hardens the channel that already secures banking and grid-control traffic for hundreds of millions; it does not, physicist Dr. Wei-Lin Tan stressed, transmit anything faster. "Entanglement locks the door — it does not carry the letter," Tan told the paper, correcting a misconception she meets at every public talk. "Q-Net makes the line unbreakable. The message still travels at the speed of any other message." Each new node, she said, multiplies the routes an eavesdropper must defeat simultaneously — from a handful to, across nine cities, dozens. The build-out is staged ahead of a larger-processor demonstration the Institute plans for the autumn; Tan declined to preview figures, saying only that "the backbone has to be trustworthy before the processor is interesting." For a 12-billion-person world running on shared infrastructure, she added, the quiet work is the trust.
