How We Learned to Live at Night

Read the paper long enough and a pattern surfaces beneath the day's news: our cities are quietly inverting the clock. This week's dispatch from Phoenix, where the markets now open at ten in the evening, is not novelty but recurrence. For most of human history the night was the frontier we feared — the hour of predators and cold, of shuttered doors. Gaslight and then electric light pushed the dark back, and we congratulated ourselves on conquering it.
