The Threshold Is a Story We Tell Ourselves

We keep waiting for round numbers to grant us permission we already have.

The Threshold Is a Story We Tell Ourselves — The Lost Archive, 2124
The Lost Archive · 3 Aug 2124 · a work of fiction. M.R.

The colony on Mars will pass fifty thousand this week, and half of Earth is holding its breath for the arithmetic. We do this — we wait for the milestone, the crossing, the number ending in zeros — as if the world only becomes real once it rounds off cleanly. The migrant count is past 112 million; it was past 108 million in July; it will be higher in September. There was never a single morning when a hundred million became a crisis, because there was never a single person whose registration tipped the scale. The threshold is a story we tell so we can point to a day and say the thing began then. It did not begin then. It began with the first family, and the second, and it has not paused for our convenience since. The Valles administrators had it right: fifty thousand is our number, not theirs. The seal is theirs. We would be wiser, and kinder, to stop waiting for the round number and start counting the people — each one already here, each one already ours to answer for.
