Valles Marineris Seals Its Fourth District as the Colony Nears Fifty Thousand

One airlock at a time, the rift settlement grows toward a milestone Earth will hear about twelve minutes late.

Valles Marineris Seals Its Fourth District as the Colony Nears Fifty Thousand — The Lost Archive, 2124

VALLES MARINERIS — The seal took eleven seconds, and by the eleventh the colony was a little larger than it had been. The fourth pressurized district along the great rift went live this cycle when engineers cycled its final airlock and let the atmosphere equalize across a new run of habitat — corridors, dormitories, two more greenhouse bays — that will carry the settlement past the number it has watched approach for a year. The population stands just under fifty thousand now, and the administrators, who long ago learned not to announce a threshold before they had crossed it, would only say the district is "certified for occupancy" and leave the arithmetic to us. The bulletin reached Earth the way everything from Mars does: finished, and late, this week a little under twelve minutes each way. By the time we read that the seal had held, the first families had already moved their belongings down the new corridor and the celebration was hours cold. "We do not build toward a headline," the administrator wrote. "We build toward the next airlock, and then the one after that. Fifty thousand is your number, not ours. Ours is the seal." On the far end of the gulf, they had already stopped counting and gone to work.
