JAKARTA — The heat did what ordinances never could: it emptied the streets by day and filled the rooftops by night. Across this megacity, where afternoon temperatures made outdoor life a hazard for a fifth straight month of the +2.8°C baseline, a nocturnal culture has bloomed on the terraces — night markets, rooftop cinemas, and the slow social hours that used to belong to the evening now belong to two in the morning. "We did not choose this. The sun chose it for us," said Rangga Wijaya, who runs a rooftop food stall that opens at midnight. "But there is something honest about a city that admits it lives at night now." Sociologists tracking the shift see both adaptation and loss: the shared daytime commons is thinning, and those without a cool place to gather after dark are simply left out of the new hours. Wijaya sees his regulars return each night the way people return to a habit that saved them. The heat took the afternoons, he said. It did not have to take everything.
