As a record heatwave strained cooling everywhere, the quantum-secured backbone stayed up — because it never carried the load people think it does.

SINGAPORE — Through the worst week of the northern heat, as data centers throttled and cooling systems faltered from Tokyo to Lagos, the Q-Net backbone stayed up without a single dropped key. Physicists at the Singapore Institute used the stress test to correct a persistent public misunderstanding: the quantum-secured network does not move data faster or carry more of it under load. It secures the classical channel. "Entanglement locks the door; it does not widen the road," said Dr. Wei-Lin Tan, the institute's quantum physicist and science communicator. "When people ask why the Q-Net did not 'route around' the heat, the honest answer is that it was never carrying the traffic — the ordinary fiber was, and the Q-Net only guaranteed no one could read it." The distinction matters as megacities lean harder on encrypted coordination during crises. The heat throttled the road, Tan noted; it never touched the lock. What survived the week was not miraculous throughput. It was the humbler thing the Q-Net was actually built to do.
