Karachi's Water Meters Now Speak Only in Unbreakable Code
As the heat dome strains the grid, the Q-Net quietly keeps the desalination corridor's controls beyond reach.

While the Makran corridor rationed water by the handspan this week, a quieter safeguard ran beneath it: every command to its pumps and valves now travels over the Q-Net, the quantum-secured backbone whose keys cannot be copied without detection. Engineers at the Singapore Institute, which advises several megacity utilities, say the shift matters most when systems run at their limit. "A desalination corridor at full pressure in a heat emergency is exactly what you do not want a stranger touching," said Dr. Wei-Lin Tan, a physicist at the Institute. She was careful about what the technology is not: the Q-Net secures the channel, she said, it does not send messages faster than light or think for itself — "no magic, just mathematics you cannot forge." Roughly a third of the world's critical-utility traffic now rides quantum-secured links, up from a handful of pilot corridors five years ago. In Karachi this week, engineer Sana Iqbal put it plainly: "The water is scarce. At least the instructions are honest."
