Peak northern demand tests a reconnected grid where the old lines were never fully rebuilt.

No one campaigned on it, no ministry planned for exactly this, and yet the single largest demand on the human grid this week is a thing with no constituency: the collective, non-negotiable need of twelve billion people to not overheat. As the South Asian dome drove the northern summer to its peak, cooling load surged across a reconnected grid whose weakest links are not its reactors but its wires — transmission corridors patched together after the disruptions of earlier decades and never fully rebuilt. "We have the generation. Fusion is carrying nearly a third of the grid and holding," said an operator with Aurora Fusion Works, monitoring a load map lit red across the northern band. "What we do not always have is a way to move it from where it is made to where a hundred million air-coolers just switched on at once." The peak held this week without a cascade, but with the margins the operators dislike — reserves thin, a few regional near-misses, the system running hot in every sense. It is the paradox of the century's grid: power is abundant and delivery is fragile, and a heat dome is a stress test nobody scheduled. "The load nobody voted for," the operator said, "is the one that decides whether the lights stay on."
