How the Night Became the Working Day

The heat-hour concerts filling Seville's plazas after dark are being reported as an invention, but the historian sees an old habit returning. Humanity has fled the midday sun many times — the siesta of the Mediterranean, the pre-dawn labor of desert farmers, the night markets of the tropics were all answers to the same arithmetic that now sends a +2.8°C city to sleep at noon and wakes it at ten. What is new is the scale and the permanence. Past cultures rested through the heat; ours is rebuilding its institutions around it, inverting the schedules of schools, markets and work across the whole warm belt at once. The concert under the misting arch is charming. The quieter story is structural: a civilization of twelve billion negotiating, week by week, which hours of the day it can still afford to be awake in. We have done this before. We have never done it everywhere, and all together, and for keeps.
