Q-Net Adds a Node, and the Encryption Everyone Forgets
A new quantum-key relay comes online without transmitting a single faster-than-light word.

SINGAPORE — The most misunderstood infrastructure of the century added a link this week, and its builders spent the announcement correcting the same error they always correct. The Singapore Institute confirmed a new quantum-key-distribution node has joined the Q-Net backbone, extending the unbreakable-encryption channel that has secured the world's classical traffic since 2110. "It does not send messages faster," said Dr. Wei-Lin Tan, the Institute physicist who has made a second career explaining this. "Entanglement secures the channel; the words still travel at the speed the words have always travelled." The distinction matters because the public keeps hoping otherwise — that a quantum link to, say, the Valles Marineris colonies might collapse the twelve-minute gulf. It cannot. What the new node does, Tan said, is make one more stretch of ordinary network impossible to eavesdrop on. In a year of loud milestones, the Institute offered a quiet one: a lock, not a shortcut. "We secured a road," Tan said. "We did not shorten it."
