The Arithmetic Starts to Flip: From Cooling Peak to the Coming Cold
With summer past its worst, engineers ask whether the build-out will keep pace with winter.

The engineers who spent July watching the northern grid strain against a heat dome have already turned the page to a colder problem. Cooling demand across the northern hemisphere is easing off its brutal midsummer peak — the dome has lifted, the load curves are bending down — and for a few weeks the reconnected grid will run with room to spare. That slack is exactly what worries the people who plan it. "Every summer we say the build-out will catch up by winter, and every winter we find out by how much it didn't," said an engineer with Aurora Fusion Works, whose next baseload reactor is due to come online in the weeks ahead. The arithmetic is unforgiving in both directions: a plus-two-point-eight world does not mean a warm one everywhere, and the same twelve billion people who begged the grid for shade in July will, come December, ask it for heat across a northern hemisphere where the old transmission lines were never fully rebuilt. Fusion sits near a third of the global grid and climbing, but climbing is a rate, not a promise. "We are not short of power," the engineer said. "We are short of the wires to move it and the reactors to make it, at the exact moment each is needed most." The peak is passing. The planners are already looking past it.
