The Clinics Quietly Opening in the Migrant Corridors

Basic augmentation follows the moving millions — and so does the question of who gets it.

The Clinics Quietly Opening in the Migrant Corridors — The Lost Archive, 2124

They are not marked, and they do not advertise, but if you follow the migration corridors long enough you start to find them: modest clinics, a few rooms each, offering basic somatic augmentation to people on the move. The lines they fit are the survival kind — heat-tolerance regulators, metabolic-load dampers, the somatic tuning that lets a body do more with less water and less shade. For a population walking the widening heat corridors, that is not enhancement in the luxury sense; it is closer to a coat in winter. "We are not making anyone superhuman," said a clinician working a corridor waystation with a mobile augmentation rig. "We are trying to keep ordinary humans alive through an ordinary crossing that used to be survivable without help." The clinics are funded by a patchwork of relief trusts and quiet philanthropy, and they run straight into the century's sharpest question: if the augmentation that keeps a migrant alive in the heat is available, does everyone in the corridor get it — or only whoever reaches this particular room? The waystation clinic serves who it can, until the day's supply runs out. Then the line, like every line this summer, simply waits.
