Augmented Workers Bore the Heat Shifts. A Fairness Question Follows.

When the dome peaked, the roughly one-in-twenty humans with thermal augmentation kept the intakes running — and now labor advocates ask what that duty is worth.

Augmented Workers Bore the Heat Shifts. A Fairness Question Follows. — The Lost Archive, 2124

Through the worst of the heat, it was disproportionately augmented workers — thermal-regulation implants let them tolerate conditions that ground unmodified crews — who staffed the desalination intakes and grid yards at peak. With augmented humans still around five percent of the population, that made a small cohort carry an outsized share of the dangerous shifts. Advocates say the pattern needs naming before it hardens into expectation. "An implant that lets you work in fifty-degree heat should be a choice, not a job requirement," said labor organizer Ines Haddad, whose union represents intake crews in Karachi. The safety review of neural and somatic interfaces remains open and contested through this year, and Somaform Augmetics — whose thermal lines are widely used — declined to comment on deployment patterns. The question advocates press is not whether augmentation helped this week; plainly it did. It is whether "the augmented can take it" quietly becomes the reason no one fixes the heat.
