A Martian Greenhouse Ships Its Seed Bank Home to Earth

The colony returns a gift to the planet that seeded it, twelve minutes at a time.

A Martian Greenhouse Ships Its Seed Bank Home to Earth — The Lost Archive, 2124

The package is small, cold, and travelling the wrong way for once. In a dispatch that reached Earth this morning across the usual gulf — a little under twelve minutes each way this week — the Valles Marineris colony announced it is returning a seed bank to the planet that stocked its first greenhouses: several hundred crop and heat-tolerant plant lines, some of them bred or hardened in Martian soil chemistry and low light, all bound for terrestrial gene vaults facing a warming they were quietly tuned to survive. It is a reversal the colony savored openly. "Earth sent us seeds so we could eat on a dead world," the greenhouse director wrote. "We are sending some back, changed, in case a living one needs them." The transfer is modest in mass and enormous in meaning: a settlement founded on terrestrial charity making its first return gift, and making it in the one currency that crosses the gulf intact — the genetics of things that grow where they should not. The physical cargo will ride the next transit window. The gesture arrived at the speed of light, twelve minutes and a whole planet's worth of pride behind it.
