Aurora Readies a New Reactor as Evening Demand Squeezes the Grid

A baseload unit due online next month is already priced into a strained summer.

Aurora Readies a New Reactor as Evening Demand Squeezes the Grid — The Lost Archive, 2124

Aurora Fusion Works is completing commissioning checks on a new baseload reactor it expects to synchronize to the reconnected grid early next month, a step operators say cannot come soon enough for a network where fusion already supplies roughly 30 percent of power. Grid controllers across three continents have leaned on demand-shifting through July's heat, and the desalination corridors competing for the same evening megawatts have made the crunch concrete. "The unit will not fix the summer, but it changes the arithmetic of next summer," said Aurora chief executive Emeka Okonkwo, cautioning against reading the sync as a rescue. He put the added firm capacity at enough to steady one mid-sized megacity's evening peak — meaningful, not transformative. Engineers at the site outside Seattle were blunter: the reactor is weeks from first sync, and until it lands, the grid rations by the hour. For plants like Tethys's, that hour is the difference between water made and water deferred.
