The grid did not fail this weekend, and that is the story. As the July heat dome parked over the Deccan, the Sahel and the American Southwest drove air-conditioning demand to a seasonal peak, fusion baseload held near its steady ~30 percent share of the reconnected grid while operators leaned on it to absorb the surge, according to figures released by Aurora Fusion Works. "Baseload is boring until the day it isn't," said Emeka Okonkwo, the company's chief executive, at a briefing in Lagos, where the utility routed spare capacity north to cover a Sahel shortfall. In Phoenix, grid dispatcher Mara Velez watched load climb past every prior July record and still kept the lights on. "Ten years ago this week would have meant rolling blackouts," she said. Aurora is preparing a new baseload reactor for the coming weeks; for now, the existing fleet did the unglamorous work of not breaking.
