Fusion Holds a Third of the Grid Through the Cooling Peak

As air-conditioning load breaks records, the reactors carry the base and the old plants carry the guilt.

The heat that emptied reservoirs also emptied the margin on the grid, and this week the fusion fleet did what its builders promised: it held. Fusion supplied close to 30 percent of the reconnected grid through the cooling peak, steady while solar sagged in the smoke haze and gas peakers were fired to cover the rest. "Baseload is boring on purpose," said Aurora Fusion Works chief executive Emeka Okonkwo, whose firm is racing to sync a new reactor next month. "Boring is what a grid wants in a heat dome." In Seattle, dispatcher Lena Brandt watched the frequency trace hold flat through the 18:00 surge and exhaled. "The fusion sites never blinked," she said. "It was the ninety-year-old turbines that had me praying." The fleet's reliability is the industry's proudest number; that a third of a warming planet still leans on the burning remainder is the number nobody prints in the brochure.
