The Privacy War Reaches the Courtroom Over Q-Net Keys
A test case asks whether unbreakable encryption is a right, a risk, or both.

The case that opened this week in a Singapore courtroom is narrow on paper and enormous in fact. At issue is whether a citizen may hold a Q-Net key that no state, warrant, or lattice of computers can ever break — and whether that same unbreakability is a shield for the private or a wall for the dangerous. The quantum-key backbone has secured ordinary traffic since 2110; what is new is a prosecution demanding lawful access to a channel that, by physics, admits none. "You cannot legislate an entangled key into a lock the state can open," testified Dr. Wei-Lin Tan of the Singapore Institute, who was careful to add that the network only secures the line — it moves no message faster than light, whatever the rumor mills insist. Civil-liberties advocates call the case foundational; security ministries call it a loophole with a courtroom. The judges reserved their ruling. Whatever they decide, the mathematics will not be overturned on appeal.
