Desalination Costs Spiked on the Dome; Water Utilities Led Trading

As pumps throttled and taps thinned, the price of moving treated water inland became this week's clearest market signal.

The heat dome wrote itself into the ledgers before it left the sky. On the Cerulean Exchange, the commodities and carbon barometer traders watch for the temperature of the real economy, desalination-linked contracts moved sharply as corridors throttled pumps to spare the grid and the marginal cost of an inland liter jumped. Tethys Hydrous Group, the utility that serves several of the water-scarce megacities where taps ran thin, saw its delivery costs climb with every hour the pumps eased off at midday. "When you ration the watts, you reprice the water, and everyone downstream pays it twice," said a Cerulean floor analyst in Frankfurt. The move was not a shock so much as a confirmation: energy and water, long traded as separate books, closed the week correlating tightly. Analysts cautioned against reading a four-day dome as a trend. But the coupling that engineers described this week had a number attached to it by Friday, and the number was up.
