On Mars, the Heat Dome Is a Twelve-Minute-Old Rumor

The Valles Marineris colony followed Earth's cooling crisis this week with a delay that made every update already history.

The nearly fifty thousand residents of the Valles Marineris settlements watched Earth's heat-dome week unfold the only way Mars ever watches Earth: late. With the planets near this stretch of their synodic cycle, a signal crosses in a little under twelve minutes each way, so every brownout bulletin and grid-margin figure reaching the colony was already a quarter-hour into the past by the time it arrived. Colony coordinators, who run their own closed thermal and water loops sealed against a world that offers neither, followed the reports with a particular detachment. "We read Earth's emergencies like weather from another country," one Valles habitat lead relayed in a dispatch stamped with the delay. "By the time we worry, it has usually already broken or held." The colony's interest was not idle: its life-support engineering is studied on Earth precisely because it assumes scarcity as a baseline. This week, a planet learning to ration watched a colony that never had the choice.
