The Thermoregulated Body: Who the Heat Dome Barely Touches

For a small enhanced minority, +2.8°C is a setting; for everyone else it's a siege.

The Thermoregulated Body: Who the Heat Dome Barely Touches — The Lost Archive, 2124

While a dozen cities rolled through brownouts and thin taps this week, a small number of people walked through the same heat dome as though it were a mild spring. They are the somatically augmented — recipients of thermoregulatory implants that shed heat and hold core temperature steady where an unaugmented body would be failing — and the heat-dome week has turned their quiet advantage into the summer's sharpest illustration of the enhancement divide. For this minority, a plus-two-point-eight afternoon is a number on a readout, a setting the body simply manages. For the nineteen in twenty who cannot afford the implant, the same afternoon is a siege endured in a cool-hour library or a browning-out apartment. No one designed thermoregulation to be a class marker; it was built for polar crews and desert workers. But the market has a way of sorting a gift, and this week the sorting was visible on the street — the few who moved easily through the heat, and the many who counted the hours until dark. The augmentation debate is often abstract. Under a heat dome it becomes as concrete as sweat, and its absence.
