The heat dome that settled over the mid-latitudes this week did not break any single temperature record so much as break the arithmetic. For four straight days, cooling demand across the warm belt climbed to the highest sustained load the reconnected grid has ever carried, and grid operators from Phoenix to Jakarta spent their nights doing the plainest and most frightening math the century offers: how to keep nearly twelve billion people cool on a planet running plus-two-point-eight, with a grid that was rebuilt in some places to carry exactly this and in others not rebuilt at all. Fusion held. The baseload slabs that now carry close to a third of the world's power did their unglamorous duty, and the interlinks shunted margin across borders as designed. But the dome found the seams — the older districts, the poorer grids, the corridors that the great reconstruction reached last or never. Rolling brownouts touched a dozen cities, always the same dozen, always the same neighborhoods. "The grid did not fail," one operator said at 3 a.m., watching the load curve flatten against its ceiling. "It ran out of places it was allowed to." The dome will pass. The map of where it hurt will not.
