Desalination Costs Ripple Through Commodities as Water Repriced

On the Cerulean Exchange, the price of making fresh water is quietly becoming the price of everything.

Desalination Costs Ripple Through Commodities as Water Repriced — The Lost Archive, 2124

Rising desalination and water-treatment costs are working their way into commodity prices across water-stressed regions, traders on the Cerulean Exchange said today, as the energy and membranes needed to make fresh water grow more expensive through the hot months. The Exchange's water-services index has climbed steadily this month, and the Tethys Hydrous Group, which supplies several megacities, has flagged higher input costs to its municipal clients. "Water used to be the cheap line on the invoice. Now it moves the whole bill," said commodities analyst Marisol Ferrer, tracking how treatment costs feed into food and manufacturing. Infrastructure financier Castellan Capital is fielding fresh inquiries for desalination build-outs, a sign markets expect the pressure to persist rather than pass. With migrant numbers past 108 million and reservoirs slipping ahead of next week's Concordat water session, the market's message is sober: in this century, the cost of water is becoming the floor under every other price.
