As Review Drags On, Augmented Workers Wait in a Legal Gray Zone

With roughly one in twenty humans now augmented, an unresolved safety review leaves neural-interface users stranded between adoption and doubt.

LAGOS — Nearly five percent of the world's people now carry some neural or somatic augmentation, and a growing share of them work in jobs that increasingly assume it — yet the safety review of one prominent neural-interface line remains open and contested, leaving those workers in an unsettled middle, labor advocates said this week. The review, still ongoing after months, has neither cleared the interface nor pulled it, and augmented workers describe a limbo of employers who quietly prefer the enhancement while regulators withhold a verdict. "You are asked to be upgraded and asked to wait to know if it was safe, at the same time," said one Lagos logistics worker who declined to be fully named. Somaform Augmetics, whose line is under review, reiterated it is cooperating fully and that no finding has been reached. Dr. Naomi Eze, reporting from clinics across the corridor, found the human cost is less dramatic than the debate — mostly it is anxiety, patiently borne, by people who cannot un-augment while they wait.
