Q-Net Carries a City's Ballots Without Reading One
A quantum-secured municipal poll shows what the backbone is for — and what it still cannot do.

SINGAPORE — A mid-sized municipal referendum this week routed its entire ballot traffic over the Q-Net quantum-secured backbone, and election monitors reported not a single intercepted or altered vote among some 340,000 cast, officials at the Singapore Institute confirmed. The demonstration is being read less as a breakthrough than as a maturing: quantum-key distribution has secured the classical network for over a decade, and civic use is now routine rather than novel. Dr. Wei-Lin Tan, a physicist at the institute, was careful to puncture the persistent public myth. "Q-Net makes the channel unbreakable; it does not make it fast, and it certainly does not read your ballot," she said. "Entanglement secures — it does not transmit." The distinction matters as more governments move sensitive processes onto the backbone. What the poll proved was modest and real: in a city of millions, the count could not be tampered with. In a distrustful age, that modest guarantee is worth a great deal.
