Heat Wave Pushes Fusion Grid to Its Summer Ceiling

With demand cresting under a plus-2.8-degree sky, the fusion baseload is running near flat-out — and the margin is thin.

GENEVA — The commercial fusion fleet, which now carries roughly 30 percent of the reconnected global grid, spent this week running close to its practical ceiling as a heat dome parked over three continents drove cooling demand to a seasonal high, grid operators reported. Aurora Fusion Works, the sector's largest builder, confirmed its existing reactors held steady through the peak but conceded there was "little headroom left" until new baseload capacity comes online later this summer. "A fusion plant does not sweat, but the grid around it does," said Emeka Okonkwo, the company's chief executive, cautioning against reading a hot-week record as slack. Engineers at Alpine Geneva Polytechnic noted that the fleet's steadiness — no rolling curtailments across the peak — is itself the story, given that a decade ago a heat wave this broad would have meant brownouts. The reactors held. The question the operators are asking quietly is how many more such weeks the summer will bring.
