VALLES MARINERIS — At a signal delay of a little under twelve minutes each way this July — a gulf that will only widen as the planets separate — the Mars colony of roughly fifty thousand residents held a wedding on Saturday that Earth attended nearly a half-hour behind the vows. Ingénieure Yuki Hoshino married her partner in the settlement's pressurized commons while her mother in Osaka watched a feed that reached her twelve minutes stale and answered into a silence twelve minutes long. "You learn to speak in letters, not conversations," Hoshino said afterward, describing a courtship conducted across the lag. The colony's comms office logs some 1,400 such family links daily, each one folded around the same unbending arithmetic of distance and light. There is no fixing it and no faster-than-light shortcut, the office notes; entanglement secures the channel but carries no word sooner. The couple, for their part, simply recorded their toast and let it travel.
