The Heat-Hour Concerts Are Back, and Half the City Sleeps Through the Day to Hear Them

SEVILLE — The city wakes at ten at night now, and it does so on purpose. Across the warm belt — Seville, Phoenix, Karachi, Lagos — the deep-summer weeks have flipped the human clock: shops shutter at noon, the streets empty into shuttered heat, and life reassembles after dark when the pavement finally exhales. Out of that inversion a whole culture has grown, and its crown jewel is the heat-hour concert. In the Alameda this week, thousands gathered from eleven until the first gray light — augmented and natural, grandmothers and toddlers, all of them dancing under misting arches to music written, now, for the cool hours. There are heat-hour weddings, heat-hour markets, a heat-hour literature of people who fell in love at three in the morning because that was when the world was livable. "We didn't lose the day," said a musician packing up as dawn threatened. "We traded it for the night. The night was always the better room." Half the city sleeps through the sun to be here. They call it a fair price.
