Rationing Eases in Karachi as the New Desal Corridor Comes Online
After eleven weeks of scheduled cutoffs, taps ran a full day this week — but engineers warn the margin is thin.
The first two units of the Makran desalination corridor delivered continuous pressure to eastern Karachi on Wednesday, the first time in three months many households saw water on demand. Municipal authorities lifted the harshest tier of rationing, though the alternating-district schedule remains for the interior. Relief agencies logged a sharp drop in standpipe disputes, which had turned violent twice in June. "We are one dry monsoon from being back where we started," cautioned hydrologist Farida Qadeer, "but for this summer, the city breathes."
